CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Maya watched Aldo Weber with his lawyer discussing his situation in the interrogation room side by side at a desk there, staring at them through the one way glass. The lawyer looked expensive, middle-aged, sharp-suited, and not at all happy to be in a police precinct at this hour of the night. Maya was impatient to get in there, but of course, Weber had lawyered up the moment they’d gotten back to the precinct.

“It’s all right,” Marco said. “He’s not going anywhere.”

Trust Marco to pick up on the tension she felt at not being able to get in there. He knew her probably as well as anyone did now. He knew things about her that no one else did.

“It’s just like I can feel the seconds ticking away,” Maya said. “We’ve used up almost all of our first day.”

“And we have a solid suspect in there to interrogate,” Marco said, “while a CSI team is down at Weber’s house, searching it for the moonstones. We’ve done a lot in one day, Maya.”

Maya just hoped that it was going to be enough. If this was the killer, and if they could prove that, then they were well ahead of schedule, yet every delay still made her feel as though they were inching closer to a woman’s death at the hands of the Moonlight Killer.

Finally, the lawyer indicated that he and his client were ready, waving them in with the confidence of someone who knew that they would be watching from the other side of the one-way glass.

Maya went in there with Marco at her side. The lawyer gestured to the desk he and Weber were sitting at, as if inviting Maya and Marco to sit down. He was obviously used to getting his way in situations involving the authorities.

“My client wishes to make it clear,” the lawyer said. “That what happened tonight was all a big misunderstanding.”

“One in which he shot at members of the FBI,” Maya pointed out. “We were there to execute a search warrant and he fired at us.”

“He believed that he was in the middle of a home invasion,” the lawyer said. “He reacted as any reasonable person might have in that situation.”

“We identified ourselves as FBI,” Maya said.

“My client didn’t hear you, and even if he had, he would have had every reason to believe that it was some trick to get him to hold still long enough for you to kill or abduct him.”

The lawyer said it in flat tones that allowed for no dispute.

Maya was willing to give in on all the points the lawyer had made in principle, but for now, she didn’t want to concede them, simply because she wanted to have as many reasons to hang on to Weber as possible until they got to the truth.

“I’m more interested in the possibility that your client has murdered at least three women,” Maya said. She watched Weber’s expression as she said it, taking in the sudden horror that crossed his features.
